June 5th - June 18th

Please Note: The date listed above are the dates on which you should travel The start date is a Friday, tuition starts on the Saturday. The return date is Thursday two weeks later. Arrival after 5pm on Friday. Departure before 10am on Thursday.

Typical Day: Breakfast at 8.30am. Teaching from 9.30 – 12.30 Break for lunch and siesta until about 3pm. Teaching period again from about 3 – 5pm Dinner at 8pm After dinner there may be a talk with slides, or some entertainment in the village. There is one free day in the middle of the course generally Friday when we usually organise a trip (optional) to Siena. This is also the cook and staffs day off. There is the choice of the Pizzeria or the Trattoria in the village for the evening meal. Tuition is available for 5 hours a day for 11 days out of the 12 days of your stay, though you are welcome to use the studios at any time. Normally there will be two life drawing sessions. Anyone with a willingness to learn is welcome whatever their standard.

This year I am running five courses. In all the courses tuition is on an individual basis, but I will also give demonstrations, talks and slide lectures. All the courses will include drawing and sculpture, but alternate courses will concentrate on one or the other. Photo-etching by a new method will be taught on the drawing courses. There will be opportunities for composition, figure and portrait sculpture using a variety of materials- clay, wax, plaster and alabaster. Drawing is encouraged and we shall have some sessions with a model. The use of mechanical stone cutting equipment will be limited to 15 min per day.f you would like to know more about my approach to sculpture and to teaching read my book, "Sculpture, the Art and the Practice" published by Verrocchio Arts (ISBN 0 9523568 0 5).

It would be helpful, if you have already done some sculpture, to bring photos of your work, but this is not obligatory.

MATERIALS
Sculpture tools are provided, though you might like to bring your own if you have particular favourites. You will need sketch books and drawing materials. Please bring working clothes or an overall and a pair of studio shoes.

Alabaster for carving is available at cost. A small charge is made for firing work in the kiln and for bringing it back to London for you in the autumn.

A camera is useful to make a record of any work you do which you decide not to keep.

At the centre we have a small shop and sell a limited range of paper and paints. We provide lightweight paper, chalk, clay and plaster. The drawing studio is equipped with easels and drawing boards.

In the neighbouring towns of Colle Val d'Elsa and San Gimignano there are art shops.

Bring a sun hat or eye-shade in July and August.
